Ghost Nets - Stop Animation

I made this video in 2015.

This stop motion animation is a result of my sculpture assignment first year at Griffith University Bach Fine Arts. We were required to produce a sculpture from recycled materials to the value of $10 or less. I came across 18 weathered thongs, which had originated from Cape York, a place well known as a destination for ocean debris to find its way to these shores.

My narrative is based on the thousands of abandoned or discarded fishing nets that we term Ghost Nets drifting in the ocean. The local community has embraced this problem washing up onto their shores. see http://www.ghostnets.com.au/

These runaway ghost nets encase their prey like a spiders web does to an insect. As these innocent victims struggle to free themselves they get more tangled, finally exhausted, sometimes starving and weighted down they die a slow cruel death. However, there are the lucky few that a recused thanks to local fishermen, the local communities in the areas. This stop animation aims to make people stop and think about how humans actions, man-made materials, lack of care and apathy for our environment cause such tragedy to these lovely creatures. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bztppSiDFe0Ghost net animation
